Made exclusively for the Kinect accessory, PowerUp Heroes turns your Xbox 360 avatar into Earth's next costumed crime fighter. Borrowing a page from 'Street Fighter' and 'Mortal Kombat' but leaving the buckets of gore behind, PowerUp has you challenging the world's greatest villains one at a time. The game lines them up and you knock them down but that's not all. When you defeat a baddie, you further embarrass them by confiscating their power suits and adding them to your collection. As you win battles, you grow more and more powerful and gain more options when taking on future foes.
The true secret of success though is being able to string together combos that fit together well. If you can puzzle that out, you will go far in ridding the Earth of evil. The suits are where the power lies though. You can only bring two of them into an individual battle, so you have to choose wisely basing your decision on whom you will be facing. There are suits with electrical powers, fire powers, magic and even psychic abilities. The range and creativity in the suits is outstanding and so too are the effects surrounding them.
As you can tell, PowerUp is not the most convoluted of games. Neither is Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter though, to be fair. Since its audience is mostly young pre-teens and young teens, who value action over prose, PowerUp is a perfect match and to get those off the couch and moving is a feat worthy of deflecting bullets or leaping tall buildings.
